Class of 1971 News
August, 2007~ As most of you should know, we have a small get together on an outer island every year usually during the Statehood day weekend. This year, our classmate, Donna (Ka’ipolani) Atay-Jones, was our host as the class of 1971 traveled to Maui. Since Donna has so many siblings that graduated in the 1970s, the Atay family turned our 1971 class event into a Decade of the 70s event. It was a blast!! The well-planned get together had 3 separate events~a kanikapila on Friday night which included a ceremony at sunset, a formal lu’au style meal on Saturday and a fun in the sun picnic on Sunday. It was very nice to have all the classes get together. It’s been decided that Oahu will host in 2008 so that we can give the off island classmates a chance to come to Honolulu to visit!! We’ll let you know what’s happening at the beginning of next year. October, 2007~ As we get older, we realize more and more how important community service is for everyone. Our class has always been a affable group of volunteers. This year our class graciously volunteered to work at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure held on the October 21st at Kapiolani Park. Aaron Mahi and the Kamehameha Alumni Men’s Glee Club performed at the opening ceremonies. Several classmates helped out in various areas around the race and the race was chaired by classmate Kepola Maii. The Susan G Komen for the Cure raises money for the education, awareness, screening and treatment of breast cancer for our underserved and uninsured population. 75% of all funds raised in Hawaii stays in Hawaii and the Susan G Komen for the Cure has given over one million dollars in grants to various organizations through out our islands. Mahalo to those who are supporting our community to end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. December, 2007~ Our annual Christmas party was held at the Miramar Hotel. Poni Daines and her talented crew put together a fun filled event with music, great food and lots of camaraderie. Wanda Machado and Kepola Maii, our games champions, had everyone cracking up and the competition was lively. As we have done in the past, instead of having a grab bag, all guests donated funds that were given to Lunalilo Home. Our mahalo to Kainoa Daines, our host at the Miramar, for a wonderful evening.

Reunion~ Last summer, there was a reunion event held on Maui that allowed all of the classes of the 70s to get together and celebrate. Normal class reunions limit our celebrating with only one other class but this event allowed us to have fun with all the classes that we went to school with. The class of 1971 is facilitating the Decade of the 70s weekend event on Oahu on August 15, 16 and 17, 2008. We have enlisted the help of several other classes and more information will be forthcoming very soon as we are in the planning stages now. We will have a casual event on Friday, a more formal event on Saturday and a picnic on Sunday. We also intend to let the class of 1970 organize the golf tournament!! All classes of the 1970s are welcomed to attend as well as their families. We are going to try to get as many off-island classmates to come as possible. Please start your networking now! |
